Industries where salaries have boomed since COVID

Salary is unsurprisingly a key factor for candidates deciding to take on a new role – or stay in their current job.

And with so much change in the job market in the past few years, being across salary trends is crucial to remaining competitive as an employer.

The latest SEEK salary data can guide your approach to attracting talent, having salary conversations with current employees and writing job ads.

For 40% of candidates, salary and compensation are more important now than compared to before COVID.

The main trigger for candidates looking for a new job is “not getting paid enough”. And now that job security has become key, candidates are looking for a 10-20% salary increase before they move roles.

The number of job ads rose 41.4% in February 2022, compared to February 2019, SEEK research shows, and at the same time, the numbers of job application levels are at low levels compared to historical trends. These two factors have led to an increased demand for workers and a need for employers to make a better offer to be competitive.

We’ve put together a list of Australian industries and jobs that have experienced the biggest salary increases between late 2019 and early 2022. Note that these are the average advertised salaries listed on SEEK (but not necessarily the salary accepted by the successful candidate).

Why salaries have been rising

The pandemic has played an important part in driving up salaries for positions advertised on SEEK, says Ivan Colhoun, Chief Economist, Corporate & Institutional Banking at National Australia Bank.

“Significantly, the border has been closed for two years until early in 2022. The large numbers of people that usually come to Australia every year haven’t been coming during that time, and it’s also been hard to get workers from interstate.”

Since the borders closed, the Australian Bureau of Statistics reports there are an extra 170,000 job vacancies, and unemployment is at 4%, which is the equal lowest since 2008 (and before that in the 1970s).

That’s meant there are far fewer candidates available than two years ago, and it’s tougher than ever for businesses to find new staff, Colhoun says.

“Advertised salaries in different professions and across sectors have risen, because it's hard to find people.”

Reflecting the tight labour market, there are fewer unemployed workers per job vacancy than ever before. And SEEK has also noted that there are fewer candidates applying for each job ad, meaning candidates have greater bargaining power.

“Businesses are having to advertise higher salaries than was the case a year ago. And it's pretty much across the board,” Colhoun says.

The jobs that are in demand

We’re seeing a spike in different industries simply due to the increase in demand, says Kevin Alexander, Managing Director of Adecco Australia.

“Healthcare, logistics, community services and education are all sectors that are experiencing skill shortages, while the demand for their services have increased.”

To combat this, organisations are offering above-average salaries to entice people to the role and their organisation.

“The tech sector continues to require skilled talent even more so now as businesses move into a more technology-driven environment. Re-skilling existing people to obtain those tech skills is a priority for all businesses,” Alexander says.

Salary spike in education and training

In Education & Training, the average advertised salary of an Education Consultant rose 35% to $82,401.

“Education and training were hard hit during the pandemic, are now seeing a significant ramp-up in activity and need the additional skills and support to get them there,” Alexander says.

The average salary of a Group Leader rose 17% to $60,659, while a Childcare Assistant salary rose 15% to $53,835.

Top pay in community services and development

In Community Services & Development, the average salary for an Educator rose 21% to $78,960, and an Employment Adviser salary increased by 20% to $71,868.

There has been an increased need for staff in community services and development during this period, Alexander says. “Demand is high, and as such people are needed to fill a wide variety of roles.”

What salary growth means for employers

“It’s a candidate’s market right now, and hiring like you’ve done in years gone by is not going to work for you now,” Alexander says.

Highlight the reasons why people would want to work for you, Alexander says. “Your Employee Value Proposition needs to be front and centre for your business.

“Clearly outline the benefits you offer, the opportunities you have available for reskilling and career advancement, using case studies from existing staff to highlight the career opportunities and range of benefits you have.”

Thomas Clifton, Associate Director, Robert Walters in Sydney says professionals are also pushing for greater career progression and development opportunities.

“Hiring managers need to deliver more than just a big pay packet to retain staff and secure new talent who can bring the most in-demand skills with them.”

Tips for attracting talent in this environment

During the hiring process, establish an efficient, streamlined process with compelling value propositions, Clifton says. Speedy interview processes and timely feedback might also help you to secure talent ahead of competitors.

“As professionals tend to receive multiple employment offers, companies that provide feedback efficiently and have quicker interview processes will invariably secure talent ahead of their competitors.”

There are plenty of ways to attract candidates beyond salary itself, Clifton says.

  • Promotes your company’s positive reputation during the recruitment process.
  • Offer perks that make the company culture appealing to potential employees.
  • Foster interpersonal relationships with candidates, which can make the difference between them accepting an offer or not.
  • Highlight personal fulfilment by explaining the importance of the role within the team and wider company, and the opportunities available for employees to make their voices heard.
  • Signpost career progression and potential opportunities for professional development.

With worker shortages and unemployment at record lows, it’s a candidate’s market right now. That’s why it’s key for businesses and organisations to position themselves as attractively as possible to candidates. Knowing which roles and industries are offering higher salaries will help you stay competitive in your approach to securing talent – but considering other points of appeal beyond salary may take you the extra mile.
